NTSE Exam, Answer Key, Cut Off, Result

NTSE, National Talent Search Exam, is a national level scholarship exam conducted by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) to identify and recognize talented students. NTSE Scholarship is for Class 10 students who want to pursue higher education. The scholarship is offered from Class 11 to PhD level to help students continue their education.

NTSE Exam is conducted at two stages, Stage 1 is state level exam and Stage 2 is National Level Exam. Students who qualify NTSE Stage 1 become eligible for NTSE Stage 2. As per the latest notification, NTSE Stage 1 exam will be conducted in November 2018 and NTSE Stage 2 exam is scheduled to be conducted on 12 May 2019. NTSE Scholarship

Every year, lakhs of students prepare for NTSE Scholarship and appear for NTSE Stage 1 and only 5000 students are selected for NTSE Stage 2. Among those 5000 students, only 2000 students are selected for the NTSE Scholarship. The scholarship is offered up to PhD level.

NTSE scholarship amount offered to students at different stages of their education is given below.

  • Class 11, 12 – Scholarship of Rs.1250 per month
  • Undergraduates and Post Graduates – Scholarship of Rs.2000 per month
  • PhD – Scholarship amount as per UGC norms

NTSE Stage 1

Students interested in NTSE Scholarship will have to appear in NTSE Stage 1 first. NTSE stage 1 is a state level exam conducted by SCERTs of individual states and UTs.  NTSE Exam Stage 1 is the first step to NTSE Stage 2. Every state releases its own NTSE application form, some of them are online form and some are offline form. The state may charge their individual application fee and impose some eligibility norms but exam pattern and exam dates remain the same for all states. As per the latest notification, NTSE Stage 1 will be held on 3 November in Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, 18 November in West Bengal and 4 November in all other States/UTs.

NTSE Stage 2

Students selected in Stage 1 are eligible to appear in NTSE Stage 2 which is a national level exam conducted by NCERT. Around 5000 students appear for NTSE Stage 2 every year. The selection of students for NTSE Exam Stage 2 is based on quota earmarks for all states/UTs. The state quota is computed on the basis of the number of students enrolled at the secondary level with a minimum of 10 for UT and 25 for a state.

NTSE Stage 2 is scheduled to be conducted on 12 May 2019. There is no application form to be filled or application fee to be paid for NTSE Stage 2 exam. The students selected by the States/UTs will get their roll number, exam centre and time details for NTSE Stage 2 directly through speed post by NCERT.

NTSE Eligibility

Students who wish to apply for NTSE Scholarship have to fulfill certain eligibility norms. Students are advised to check NTSE Eligibility criteria before applying. The eligibility norms for NTSE Stage 1 and 2 are given below. 

  • All Indian Nationals are eligible to apply for NTSE Exam
  • Students should be studying in Class 10 in any recognized school including Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya Vidyalaya, and Sainik School etc.
  • Students should be appearing in Class 10 for the first time.
  • There is no domicile restriction imposed for appearing in NTSE Exam.
  • Students studying from Open and Distance Learning (ODL) are also eligible for NTSE scholarship provided the students are below the age of 18 years (as on 1st July 2018) and are not employed.
  • Indian Students studying abroad having secured minimum 60% marks Class 9 can appear in NTSE Stage 2 directly.

NTSE Application Form 

AS NTSE Stage 1 is conducted by SCERT of respective State/UTs, the mode of filling the application form, application fee and application dates vary from state to state. Every state releases advertisement or circular in the school for NTSE Stage 1 exam. After checking eligibility norms in the advertisement, students need to fill the application form, get it duly signed by the Principal and submit it before the due date. Students can get NTSE application form from the Liaison Officer of the State/UT or online from the SCERT website of the respective state. NTSE Application Form Stage 2 – Students studying in India

There is no NTSE application form for Stage 2. Students who are selected in Stage 1 will get all the details regarding their NTSE Stage 2 exam centre, timings and roll number through speed post by NCERT. Also, there is no need to pay any application fee to anyone for NTSE Exam Stage 2.

NTSE Application Form Stage 2 – Indian Students Studying Abroad

Indian Nationals studying abroad can directly appear for NTSE Stage 2. The candidate will have to appear in the NTSE exam centre in India at her/his own cost. The candidate will have to fill in the application form duly signed with the head of institution where he/she is studying and send it to NCERT along with an attested copy of Class 9 mark sheet. Then, the council will allot roll numbers to the eligible candidates and inform them about the exam centre, date and timings with relevant information.

NTSE Admit Card 2018-19 – Stage 1 and Stage 2

NTSE Admit Card will be made available separately for Stage 1 exam and Stage 2 exam. Students appearing for Stage 1 will be issued NTSE Admit Card 2018 at least one week before the exam date by respective SCERT of the State/UT. For students appearing in NTSE Stage 2, the admit card will be issued online by NCERT in April 2019. Only those candidates who have successfully submitted the application form will be able to download the admit card for NTSE exam.

NTSE admit card is an important document to keep as students will not be allowed to enter the examination hall without admit card. NTSE Exam Pattern 2018-19

Students appearing for NTSE exam 2018 must check the exam pattern below. There are 2 papers, MAT and SAT. MAT question paper consists of mental ability questions and SAT question paper consists of 3 subjects, Science, Social Science and Mathematics. The NTSE exam pattern is given in the table below.

NTSE Syllabus 2018-19

There is no prescribed syllabus for NTSE exam by NCERT. However, students can go through the following details of MAT and SAT question paper.

NTSE Syllabus – MAT

NTSE MAT will have mental ability questions to test the student’s power of reasoning, ability to think, ability to judge, evaluate etc. NTSE MAT question paper will cover the following topics:

  • Blood Relations
  • Analogies
  • Series
  • Classification
  • Calendar, Time and Clock
  • Coding-Decoding
  • Cube and Dice
  • Missing Character
  • Ranking and Arrangements
  • Problem-solving

NTSE Syllabus – SAT

NTSE SAT Question paper will have 40 questions of Science, 40 questions of Social Science and 20 questions of Mathematics. The questions in the NTSE exam will be based on NCERT. Students are advised to study and revise the complete syllabus of Class 9 and 10 NCERT.

NTSE Answer Key 2018-19

As NTSE Stage 1 is scheduled to be conducted on 3, 4 and 18 November 2018, most of the states will release the NTSE answer key for stage 1 in the last week of November 2018. Students will be able to download answer key on this page and evaluate their marks by matching their answers. Students can also challenge the answer key, based on that the revised answer key will be released. On the basis of the final NTSE answer key, NTSE result will be prepared and students will be shortlisted for NTSE Stage 2.

NTSE Result 2018-19

NTSE Result Stage 1 will be declared in January 2019. Students appearing in NTSE exam in November will be able to check their result online. NTSE Result will be declared state-wise. Students can check their NTSE Stage 1 result on the official websites of SCERT of their respective state/UT.

NTSE Cut Off

NTSE Cut off is the minimum qualifying marks for NTSE exam. As per the NTSE notification, the minimum qualifying marks to qualify NTSE exam is given below. However, the cut off marks will be declared soon after the NTSE result by SCERT for Stage 1 and NCERT for stage 2. The latest updates on NTSE cut off will be available here.

Question: What is the duration of NTSE Scholarship?

Answer: The awardees studying in Science, Social Science, Humanities, Languages, Commerce, vocational studies and fine arts will get scholarship up to PhD level. The awardees studying professional courses in medicines, engineering, technology, management and law will get the scholarship up to second-degree level.

Question: I am studying in India. Can I appear in NTSE Stage 2 directly?

Answer: No, only students recommended by the State/UT can appear for NTSE Stage 2.

Question: Where can I get the application form for Stage 1?

Answer: You can contact Liaison Officer of your State/UT. You can also check online on SCERT website of your state.

Question: Where can I get the application form for Stage 2?

Answer: Candidates who have selected in NTSE Stage 1 need not fill any application form for Stage 2 exam. NCERT will send roll number and exam details to all candidates through speed post.

Question: Is there any negative marking?

Answer: No, there is no negative marking in NTSE exam.
